About Băile Călacea
Half an hour north of Timișoara, in flat Banat farmland at 117 m altitude, there is a small resort that has been quietly doing the same thing since the 1970s: treating backs, knees and nerves with warm mineral water, at prices that have not caught up with the rest of the country. A single electrotherapy session starts at 25 lei.
We had the water itself wrong for a long time, and the correction matters because it flips the profile. We described a hypertonic chloride and sodium water with bromine and iodine. The operator describes its own water as bicarbonate, sodium, hypotonic and mesothermal, at 38 to 39 °C. Hypotonic and hypertonic are opposites, and the difference decides what a bath in it does to you.
The healing effect of these waters was first noticed around the 1880s. The first arrangements for a bath were made between 1906 and 1916, and the place reached what the operator calls a notable level in the 1970s. It is a resort of local interest, which in Romanian planning language means small, municipal in spirit, and not on anybody's tour circuit.
Bicarbonate and sodium, and gently so
- The operator gives the water as bicarbonate, sodium, hypotonic and mesothermal, at 38 to 39 °C. Independent listings repeat the same reading, which is unusual enough in Romanian resort documentation to be worth saying.
- Our previous description, a hypertonic chloride and sodium water with bromine and iodine, appears in none of them. Hypotonic means less concentrated than blood plasma, which is the opposite of what we published, and neither bromine nor iodine shows up in any source we could find.
- Some listings add chloride alongside the bicarbonate and call the water isothermal rather than mesothermal. At 38 to 39 °C mesothermal is the fitting term, since that band sits between the cold waters and the genuinely hot ones.
- No operator publishes a mineralisation figure in g/l for Călacea, so we do not print one. Hypotonic tells you it is on the low side without giving a number.
A locomotor resort with a digestive side
- The indications that recur across sources are locomotor conditions, degenerative rheumatic conditions, orthopaedic and post-traumatic conditions, and peripheral nervous system conditions. That is the core of what the treatment base works on.
- A second group appears alongside them: chronic gastritis and hepatobiliary conditions, and in some listings renal and urinary conditions. Those come from the drinking side of a bicarbonate water rather than from the baths.
- We used to list gynaecological conditions here. No source we checked names them for Călacea, so they are off this page and off our filters until an operator publishes them.
- Published contraindications for hot baths here name hypertension, malignant disease, infectious disease, cardiac insufficiency and tuberculosis. A 38 °C bath is a cardiovascular load, and that is the reason for the first and the fourth on that list.
Procedures from 25 lei
- The base offers electrotherapy from 25 lei, kinesiotherapy from 30 lei, hydrotherapy from 40 lei and massage from 25 lei. Those are per-procedure prices, published by the operator.
- Beyond the four headline services, the base runs individual baths, magnetotherapy, laser therapy, paraffin wraps, diadynamic currents, light baths, aerosols and acupuncture.
- Cure packages are priced whole: 1,375 lei for 5 days, 3,055 lei for 12 days and 4,020 lei for 17 days. The 12 and 17 day options match the classic balneal cure lengths.
- Medical assistance runs all year, weekends included, which is what separates Călacea from the summer strands around it. The pools are seasonal; the treatment base is not.
Three pools, an acacia wood and a lily lake
- The outdoor bathing area has three pools: one olympic-sized, one thermal-water pool and one for children. All three are seasonal.
- The park covers 15 hectares of acacia forest, century-old trees and a lake with white water lilies. There is a small animal enclosure with deer, pheasants and rabbits, and sports grounds.
- Accommodation is 72 places in three-star villas plus 30 places in one-star cottages. The restaurant seats 230, 140 inside and 90 on the terrace, and works on full board with three meals a day.
- The operator credits the flat-country sedative bioclimate as a therapeutic factor in its own right, alongside the water, with a mean annual temperature of 15 °C.
What is published, and what is not
- Accommodation is 170 lei for a single in a three-star villa, 240 lei for a double and 300 lei for an apartment. The DORA cottages are 180 lei for three places.
- The operator publishes no entry ticket price for the pools and no daily schedule. Listings elsewhere mention around 30 lei for an adult, with hours of 08:00 to 20:00 or 10:00 to 21:00 and possible midweek closures, and those figures disagree with each other.

Off the Timișoara–Arad road
- Take the E671 between Timișoara and Arad, turn left at Orțișoara and follow the road 6 km to the sign marked Călacea. The resort is 25 km from Timișoara and 30 from Arad.
- Being between the two cities is the practical argument for this place. Almost nowhere else in Banat puts a working treatment base that close to a million people.
- Buziaș, with carbogaseous waters and a different profile, is about 60 km south-east, and the Arad-county strands at Curtici and Dorobanți are the other neighbours.
- The resort is a village in its own right, Călacea-Băi, in the commune of Orțișoara. Do not confuse it with the other Călacea in Satu Mare County.
