About Băile Figa
The correction has to come first, because we got this one wrong for a long time. Băile Figa is not a thermal resort. There is no hot aquifer under it and no operator publishes a source temperature, because there is none to publish. What Figa has is salt water and mud, the same combination that made Techirghiol famous, and freshwater pools that are heated by machinery to 31 to 32 °C.
That makes it a better place than the old description suggested, not a worse one. Salt at this concentration is a real therapeutic factor, and it has been coming out of this valley for five thousand years. The complex covers 15 hectares three kilometres from Beclean, and on a good day last season it took in around 10,000 people.
It also sits on top of something most visitors never hear about. The archaeological site at Figa is the most relevant salt-exploitation site of the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the post-Roman period anywhere in south-eastern and south-central Europe. People were taking salt out of this ground around 3000 BC and did not stop until the twentieth century.
Two different waters, and only one is salty
- The salt basins are open air. The main one is 1.7 m deep and connects to a smaller one of about 0.6 m, which is the one families with small children use.
- The freshwater pools are separate and heated to 31 to 32 °C. That heat comes from equipment, not from the ground, and it is the reason people mistake Figa for a thermal resort.
- We used to publish 41 to 45 °C and the word thermal on this page. Both are gone. Nobody publishes a figure that supports them, and the operator's own description gives 31 to 32 °C for the only heated water on site.
- The salt water and the mud are described as comparable in properties to Techirghiol, which is the reference everyone in Romania uses for this kind of therapy. No one publishes a salinity measurement for Figa, so we do not print one.
Fifteen hectares, three slides and a salt aerosol walk
- Besides the salt lake and the heated pools there are mud basins, three water slides, a lazy river, an indoor pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna and a fitness room.
- The longitudinal and circular salt aerosol structures, built in 2020, are among the first therapeutic salt-air installations of their kind in Romania. Walking past them is the closest thing here to a salt mine session.
- The Legacy Recreation Center opened in 2022 and adds 3,150 sqm of pools and wellness. A medical rehabilitation centre followed in 2023, offering kinesiotherapy and electrotherapy.

Five thousand years of taking salt out of this valley
- Salt exploitation at Figa began around 3000 BC, in the Bronze Age, and continued without a real break until the twentieth century. Very few places in Europe can show that kind of continuity in one spot.
- The site is described as the most relevant salt-exploitation site of the Bronze Age, Iron Age and post-Roman periods in the whole of south-eastern and south-central Europe, and as unique in Romania.
- What makes it exceptional is preservation. The salty, waterlogged ground kept prehistoric wooden mining tools intact, which almost never survives elsewhere. Objects over 3,000 years old have come out in a condition that lets you see how they were used.
- Twenty years of excavation produced the exhibition Milenii de exploatare a sării la Băile Figa, opened in June 2025. An open day at the site is held periodically, and it is worth checking the dates if the archaeology is your reason for coming.
- Băile Figa was recognised as a tourist resort of local interest in 2021, and came third in Romania's EDEN European destination-of-excellence competition in 2019.
The weekend costs two thirds more
- Entry is 30 lei a day Monday to Thursday and 50 lei a day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Children under 7 are free.
- The jacuzzi and the sauna are charged separately, at 5 lei for 20 minutes. A tennis court is 20 lei an hour.
- The water slides need their own wristbands, one for entry to the park and one for each slide you intend to use. Sort that out at the gate rather than at the top of the stairs.
- The operator kept 2026 prices unchanged from the previous season, which in a market that reprices every spring is worth noting.
A short season, and one date that disagrees
- Open daily 08:00 to 21:00, from 15 June to 30 September. That is the schedule published by Beclean town hall.
- Local press reported the 2026 season opening on Friday 12 June, three days ahead of the official date. If you are planning the first half of June, phone before you drive.
- This is a summer strand. Unlike Tășnad there is no winter pavilion, so the salt basins are out of use for most of the year.
- Ten thousand visitors on a peak day tells you what a hot Saturday in August looks like here. Weekdays cost less and are emptier, and the two go together.
Three kilometres from Beclean
- The resort lies in a hollow surrounded by forest, 3 km from Beclean in Bistrița-Năsăud County. Beclean has a railway station on the main line, which makes this reachable without a car.
- Bistrița is about 35 km away and Cluj-Napoca roughly 100, so Figa is a comfortable day trip from either.
- Accommodation is in guesthouses, cabins and holiday houses around the resort and in Beclean itself. There is no large hotel on site.
- Sângeorz-Băi, with a completely different water, is about 45 km north-east if you want two profiles in one trip.
