About Băile Nicolina (Iași)
Two different operations sit on the same deposit in southern Iași, 200 metres apart, and confusing one for the other explains most of the questions people ask about the place. The treatment base and Hotel Nicolina 2*, at Str. Pantelimon Halipa 12, belong to T.B.R.C.M. S.A., a company whose sole shareholder is the National Public Pension House. Plaja Nicolina, known locally as Purcica, is at number 3 on the same street and is run by Iași City Hall as one of three municipal leisure sites, alongside Ciric and the Municipal Strand.
A 16-day treatment ticket costs 3,480 lei in 2026, more than two hundred times the 15 lei a day at the beach. The second thing worth fixing is the water. Nicolina is not a thermal resort. The operator describes its own resource as hypotonic and hypothermal mineral water, meaning water that is cold at source, around 19–21 °C, heated for the pool and tub baths. Plenty of descriptions call it mesothermal, which suggests exactly the opposite.

What the sources say
- The operator describes the deposit as sulphurous, iodinated, sodium-chloride, hypothermal mineral water with artesian flow and a hydrogen sulphide concentration of 331 mg/l.
- Figures from the Nicolina balneary clinic give three boreholes with a total mineralization of 23 g/l and four springs at 21 °C. Depths: 200 m (the Victor spring), 400–500 m (the Dorin spring) and 1,000 m, the last a thermal sodium-chloride water not used in the current circuit.
- Secondary medical portals describe the same water as isotonic, mesothermal, pH 8.48, mineralization 10 g/l — three contradictions against the operator’s own page. No dated laboratory report for Nicolina is public.
- The operator presents those 331 mg/l as the highest concentration in Europe, with a single comparable source in the Caucasus, not used therapeutically. That is its claim, not an independently verified fact.
Made on the spot
- The mud is produced here, not brought in. A borehole sunk in the 1950s pushed artesian water into the Bahlui floodplain, where it formed a black, unctuous mud — a biochemical product of the biomass under the action of the mineral water, in the presence of putrefaction bacteria and reducing sulphur bacteria.
- Today it is obtained deliberately, by putting the mineral water in contact with selected soils. At the beach it is used as anointings on the joints, 10–20 minutes, followed by a sulphurous-water shower and air exposure. Inside the treatment base: warm wraps and vaginal mud tampons.
Two circuits, two different visits
- The treatment base works with heated sulphurous water, in pools and in tubs; the indoor ones are usable in winter too.
- The rest of the procedures: galvanic baths, underwater massage, underwater shower, thermotherapy, paraffin, aerosols, electrotherapy, low-frequency magnetotherapy, TECAR, therapeutic massage, lymphatic drainage and medical gymnastics.
- The beach is the summer version of the same water, sulphurous water and mud, and it is divided by sex: 120 of the 180 sun loungers sit in the women’s sector. That layout is rare in Romania and worth knowing before you arrive with mixed company.
- The beach still works in its old state. Iași City Hall has a modernization project — demolition, reshaped sand, enclosures for privacy, parking, new sulphurous-water and mud-preparation installations, new pools — costed at over 20 million lei and 36 months, of which 24 for the works. It is about ten years old, was rebranded Nicolina Wellness – Beach and Spa, and has no funding.
Opening times
- The treatment base runs on 15 series between 27 April and 21 December 2026, with staggered entry days; Nicolina has 3–4 entry days per series.
- It is not a seasonal unit. In 2022 it opened on 14 February.
- The beach: 9:00–18:00 daily, open since the beginning of May 2026.
- The treatment base runs at capacity, with a waiting list. Some patients call a year ahead to get the series they want, and part of the intake comes from France, Belgium, Italy and the Republic of Moldova.
Treatment ticket vs beach
- CNPP treatment ticket, 16 days, Hotel Nicolina 2*: 3,480.00 lei in 2026, against 3,156 lei in 2025 (CNPP table, 28 April 2026). The pensioner pays 50% of their pension; the rest comes from the social insurance budget.
- Nicolina sits in the cheapest bracket of the TBRCM network, alongside Bizușa, Buziaș 2*, Amara 2*, Covasna 2* and Geoagiu 2*. The 3* units cost 3,688 lei.
- Paying in full, without a CNPP ticket: 230 lei a day, covering accommodation, meals and 4 procedures, on a referral note plus health card (resort director, June 2025). In 2022 the same package was 140 lei a day. There is also an outpatient regime, again 4 procedures a day, for people staying elsewhere in the city.
- Beach rates, published by the municipality on 11 June 2026: adults 15 lei, children under 7 5 lei, parasol 10 lei, sun lounger 10 lei. A 10-entry pass at 20 lei for pensioners with pensions under 1,500 lei. Free for Revolution fighters, war veterans and war widows, political prisoners and people with first-degree disability.
- No per-procedure price list is published, neither by TBRCM nor for the beach. The mud rate does not appear in the 2026 municipal list; in 2025 it was 2 lei a session. The 5 lei figure circulating on aggregators looks like a mix-up with the under-7 entry. For an exact amount, call 0232/251.648.
Good to know
- By cure factor, briefly: heated sulphurous baths address rheumatic, post-traumatic, neurological and peripheral vascular conditions; the mud, arthrosis and tendon and muscle disorders; the external dermatological cure, some forms of psoriasis, eczema, chronic urticaria and seborrheic dermatitis; aerosols, chronic bronchitis, asthma and sinusitis; vaginal irrigations and mud tampons, ovarian insufficiency, adnexitis, chronic cervicitis and secondary sterility.
- The internal cure is explicitly restricted: early-stage hepato-biliary conditions only, properly diluted. The balneary clinic is categorical — the high mineralization and the narrow range of sources rule out the uncontrolled drinking you see at resorts with table waters. Nicolina is not a crenotherapy resort and should not be presented as one.
- The indication registered with CNPP for the Nicolina ticket is rheumatic and dermatological conditions. The others are real, but not what the ticket is allocated on.
- Published contraindications: neoplastic disease; arterial hypertension, heart failure, blood disorders, haemorrhage; liver, kidney and psychiatric conditions. The administration rule asks for an hour of rest before and after each procedure — the treatment is a form of exercise.
- Staying over: Hotel Nicolina 2*, on site, 150 beds in 75 rooms, is the only option with treatment included. In the city, Hotel Moldova 3* (Str. Anastasie Panu 31, with indoor pool, sauna and spa), Unirea Hotel & Spa 4* (Piața Unirii 5) and Hotel Palas Grand View 3*.
