About the Tășnad thermal strand
Tășnad is a municipal strand, and that shapes everything about it. The town hall drilled the borehole, the town hall runs the pools, and the town hall sets the price, which is why a day here costs 45 lei rather than the 70 to 120 that private aquaparks in the same corner of the country ask.
The water arrived in 1978, when a well went down 1,354 m and came back at 70 °C. The strand opened the same year and has run ever since. Satu Mare county holds roughly a third of Romania's thermal water, and Tășnad is one of the few places where it is actually developed rather than sitting in the ground.
The thing most people miss is the winter pavilion. It has a thermal pool and it runs while the outdoor basins are drained, which makes Tășnad one of the few strands in the north-west you can use in February. The summer season starts on 1 May.
Not the simple salt water we used to describe
- The town hall publishes a total mineralisation of 9.48 g/l and a composition that is predominantly chloride, bicarbonate and sulphate, sodium, calcium and magnesium, with ammonium and potassium present.
- We used to describe this as a sodium chloride water with bromine and iodine. That is the short version other sites repeat, and it drops the bicarbonate and sulphate that the operator's own analysis puts in the same breath as the chloride. We have replaced it with what the town hall publishes.
- We also used to give 45 to 48 °C as the water temperature. The published figure is 70 °C at the surface. The 45 to 48 range is roughly what a pool feels like after cooling, but no operator publishes per-pool temperatures, so we no longer print numbers for them.
- At 9.48 g/l this is a properly mineralised water, several times saltier than the oligomineral waters at the other end of the scale. You will taste it, and you will want a shower afterwards.
An external cure, and one caveat
- The town hall's list for the external cure names pre-arthrotic conditions, degenerative rheumatism, extra-articular rheumatism, post-traumatic sequelae, peripheral nervous system conditions and gynaecological conditions, plus toning baths for general fitness.
- That is a locomotor profile, and it fits the water. A warm, well-mineralised bath is the classic setting for degenerative and extra-articular rheumatism, and it is what most regulars here come back for.
- The same list also names dermatological conditions. We have left that off our filters, because no accredited treatment base in the resort publishes a protocol behind it, and dermatological claims are the single most frequently overstated item on Romanian resort pages. Ask a doctor before treating it as a reason to come.
- There is no hospital or accredited balneal base at the strand itself. If you need prescribed procedures settled through the health insurance house, this is not where you get them.
Cheaper the longer you stay
- Day ticket 45 lei for adults and 25 lei for children, pupils and students. Under 6 is free. Those are the prices on the resort's own online ticketing.
- Passes cut the daily rate. A family pass over 3 consecutive days or more brings it to 35 lei for adults and 15 for children; a 5-day pass is the same; a pensioner pass over 7 consecutive days or more is 30 lei a day.
- Entry is by chipped silicone wristband with a 20 lei deposit, refunded the same day on the way out. The wristband lets you come and go as many times as you like during the day.
- There is a camping area and a multifunctional sports field on site, both charged separately from the entry ticket.
Fourteen hours a day in summer
- Summer hours are 08:00 to 22:00, Monday to Sunday. The season opens on 1 May, and the outdoor basins run through the warm months.
- The winter pavilion carries the off-season with its own thermal pool, so the strand does not simply shut when the outdoor basins are drained.
- The ticketing page splits its schedule into season and off-season without filling in the off-season dates. Phone 0261 827 820 before driving out between November and April.
- A fourteen-hour day and a wristband that permits re-entry make this a good place to arrive late. The after-16:00 discounts that ran in past seasons are worth asking about at the gate.
In the middle of the thermal north-west

- Satu Mare is about 60 km north and Oradea about 80 km south, which puts Tășnad in the middle of the densest thermal cluster in the country.
- Acâș is roughly 20 km away and Săcueni about 40, so a weekend can reasonably take in two or three strands without long drives.
- Accommodation is in the resort area around the strand and in the town, mostly guesthouses and small hotels rather than large complexes.
