About Geoagiu Băi
A spa resort in Hunedoara County, up a hill about 7 km above the town of Geoagiu. It has roughly 16 thermomineral springs, mesothermal at 29 to 33 °C at source and 32 to 33 °C in the pools. The waters are bicarbonate, calcic, magnesian and hypotonic, with a low mineralisation of around 1 to 1.5 g/l, and they are not radioactive.
The Germisara Roman thermae are the resort historical claim, and they are worth setting straight before you arrive: the site sits in the centre of the resort, on a mound fenced with wire. Visiting is free and unrestricted, but you cannot bathe there. A good number of visitors turn up expecting to soak in Roman baths and find an archaeological site instead. The bathing happens at the modern strand, a few hundred metres away.
Region & access
- Off the A1 at the Aurel Vlaicu exit, then DJ705; or off DN7/E68 at the roundabout by Geoagiu station.
- Usable stations are Geoagiu, Orăștie, Simeria, Deva and Alba Iulia — but from any of them you still have about 7 km uphill to the resort, by car or taxi. There is no regular public transport up.
- Orăștie 18 km, Alba Iulia 52 km, Sibiu 105 km on the A1, around an hour and 35 minutes. Airports: Sibiu roughly 110 km, Cluj roughly 180 km.
Water & minerals
- Around 16 thermomineral springs, mesothermal at 29 to 33 °C at source. In the pools the water sits at 32 to 33 °C — warm enough to stay in for a long time, not hot enough to feel like a thermal bath in the Herculane sense.
- Bicarbonate, calcic, magnesian and hypotonic, with a mineralisation of about 1 to 1.5 g/l. One source gives 1,475 mg/l. They are not radioactive.
- The Olympic pool here is presented as the only one in the country filled with thermal water for competitive swimming, which is the resort main technical distinction.

- Hotel Germisara Resort & SPA has indoor and outdoor thermal pools plus a fresh water pool, free for its guests. Hotel Diana has a semi-Olympic indoor thermal pool and a sauna; Hotel Aida has an indoor thermal pool at around 36 °C, a Finnish sauna and a salt room.
The strand and the hotels
- Complexul Băile Daco-Romane is the main strand and the one open to everyone: four pools including an Olympic one and a children pool, spread over about 23,000 square metres, with lifeguards and a medical point.
- The Olympic pool does not open together with the rest of the strand. Historically it only came into service from July. If you are coming specifically to swim lengths, phone ahead.
- Hotel Germisara has thermal pools indoors and out, free for guests. A day rate for outside visitors is not published, which is the case at Diana too.
- The 2026 season opened on 29 May, with free entry on the first day. The operator kept about 80% of its food prices at 2025 levels.
- Accommodation for reference: Germisara half board per night, 114 euro for a double between 13 April and 27 June, 126 euro from 28 June to 5 September, with a five-night balneal package at 636 or 700 euro. Hotel Aida charges 300 lei for an economy double with breakfast, 360 lei superior, and 450 to 500 lei at weekends.
- How the resort compares within a two-hour radius: it is cheaper than the Bihor aquaparks and far quieter, but it has nothing like their slide infrastructure. Geoagiu is a swimming and soaking destination with a treatment base attached, not a water park. Families coming for slides will be disappointed; couples and older visitors generally are not.
- Because the water sits at 32 to 33 °C rather than 38 or 40, sessions here can run much longer than at a hot sulphurous resort. That suits the orthopaedic and post-traumatic recovery profile, where the point is sustained movement in warm water rather than a short intense soak.
Opening hours
- The strand runs Monday to Friday 09:00–19:00 and Saturday to Sunday 08:00–19:00. The weekend difference is the earlier opening, not a later close.
- Tariffs hold across the whole summer season — there is no weekend price, only the earlier start.
- This is the weekend destination for Hunedoara and Alba counties. Arrive at 08:00 on a Saturday, or come after 16:00 when the reduced rate kicks in.
- The Germisara Roman thermae in the resort centre can be visited free, with no opening hours, since it is an open fenced site rather than a museum.

- Search results still quoting 40 or 30 lei are using 2023 prices, and 30 or 25 lei is the 2021 grid. The current figures are 60 and 40 lei plus the tax.
Good to know
- The Roman thermae are a fenced archaeological site, not a bathing venue. Free to visit, but you swim at the modern strand.
- The Olympic pool historically opens later than the rest of the strand, from July. Call ahead if that is what you came for.
- Budget the 1 leu resort tax on top of the ticket, per person, paid at the desk.
- The resort is 7 km uphill from the town of Geoagiu, with no regular public transport. Without a car you are relying on taxis from the station.
- Around the resort: the Măzii, Ardeului and Bacâiei gorges at 10 to 14 km, the Cigmău cave at 8 km, and Corvin Castle at under 60 km — enough to build a two- or three-day trip around the strand.
- The A1 makes a difference here that it does not for most Romanian spa towns. Sibiu is an hour and a half away on motorway, and the Aurel Vlaicu exit puts you within twenty minutes of the resort, so Geoagiu works as a stop on a longer drive rather than only as a destination in itself.
- Do not rely on the online prices you find first. The published figures have moved from 30 lei in 2021 to 40 lei in 2023 to 60 lei in 2026, and older articles still rank well in search results. The resort tax is a further leu on top, and it is never included in the quoted price.
