About Sărata Monteoru
Sărata Monteoru, in Buzău County, is one of the few Romanian spa resorts with a birth certificate: it was officially inaugurated on 1 July 1895, although the curative waters had been mentioned since 1837. Grigore Constantinescu-Monteoru, who had made his fortune in oil, commissioned the German architect Eduard Honzik to design an entire resort: chapel, casino, English-style park, hotels. The casino was completed in 1900. The Monteoru villa and chapel are listed historic monuments, and in 2010 the resort was named a European Destination of Excellence, third place for water tourism.

The springs, the water and the mud
There is no lake here. The resource comes from underground: 3 hydrogeological boreholes, one mine shaft and 19 springs, with a mineralisation that reaches 513 g/l. On Culmea Nămolului there are concentrated sulphurous, sodium-chloride, ferruginous and iodinated springs, together with clay and the depositional mineral mud used in treatments. That is the essential difference from the sapropelic lake mud of the south-east, at Amara or at Techirghiol.
- Spring no. 6, in the resort centre, is the one used for drinking cures, under medical supervision.
- A so-called eye spring on Dealul Murătoarea has a long local tradition of use, without any official recommendation attached to it.

Hotel Ceres
Hotel Ceres is the state unit in the resort, operated by TBRCM, whose sole shareholder is the National House of Public Pensions. Unlike most units in this network, it is not reserved for treatment vouchers: it also sells stay packages with full board and procedures to the general public, it has had its own website since January 2026, with booking and offer sections, and the local tourist information centre lists it as a bookable property, holiday vouchers included.
