About Șofronea Thermal Strand
Șofronea is the pool most people near Arad drive to in February. Three pools in the park behind Purgly Castle, water that runs warm enough to bathe outdoors in winter, and 25 lei at the gate. This page called it seasonal until now, which was wrong: a newspaper reporter filed a piece from here in the middle of February 2020.
The more important correction is medical. In August 2015 the National Institute of Rehabilitation, Physical Medicine and Balneoclimatology ran 26 borehole samples and 8 pool samples over 52 days, under Dr Delia Cinteză, and classified the water as mineral, bicarbonate, sodium, hyperthermal and hypotonic, in the category of therapeutic mineral water. It came with four named indications. We were describing this as water for recreation and family relaxation.
One thing to be precise about: that opinion is a technical certification of the cure factors, not the legal status of a spa resort. Under Romanian law the status of balneal resort is granted by Government decision, and Șofronea does not appear in the published lists. The water is certified. The place is a pool, not a resort.
Bicarbonate, sodium, hypotonic
- The INRMFB classification runs: mineral water, bicarbonate, sodium, hyperthermal, hypotonic. Hypotonic means low mineralisation, which contradicts the press descriptions calling it rich in minerals.
- The three pools run at different temperatures, reported as a 24 to 51 °C spread. The 51 °C figure is the hottest pool, not the borehole. No source publishes the temperature at the source.
- The 33 to 37 °C range this page used to give appears in no source. It sat below the institute's own classification of the water as hyperthermal, which starts above 37 °C.
- No mineral concentrations have ever been published, not one figure in mg/l. A 2026 newspaper piece lists sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron and chlorides, which does not match a bicarbonate sodium hypotonic classification. The 2015 institute document itself is not public.
Four indications, named
- Chronic degenerative rheumatic conditions. Chronic abarticular conditions. Post-traumatic conditions of the locomotor system. Chronic peripheral neurological conditions. That is the INRMFB list, in full.
- Dermatological conditions are not on it. The claim reaches Arad pools through a generic article about thermal water in general, published on a local portal and illustrated with a photograph of the Dorobanți pool. Portals then attach the generic text to specific resorts.
- A 2026 newspaper piece adds spondylosis, sciatica, stress, depressive states and bronchial asthma. None of those are in the certification. The same article quotes a woman saying a doctor from Băile Felix recommended Șofronea to her patient, which is an anecdote, not evidence.
- There is no treatment base here, no doctor and no procedures. The water carries an opinion; the site offers bathing.
None published
- No contraindications are published for Șofronea, by the operator or by anyone else. Not even the standard warnings.
- With water certified as hyperthermal and a pool reported at 51 °C, that gap matters. Heat is the variable that causes trouble for people with cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension or in pregnancy.
- The nearest published reference list in the region belongs to a pool in Satu Mare County, which also sets out bathing durations: 15 to 20 minutes at 40 °C and above, at least 30 minutes between baths, and a cooler shower afterwards.
- Ask your own doctor before a cure, particularly if you plan to use the hottest pool.
Three pools in a castle park
- The two most recent accounts, from 2020 and 2026, both describe three pools: one covered and fed straight from underground at close to 40 °C, one moderately warm, and a larger swimming pool with hydromassage.
- Older sources disagree. A national daily once wrote that Șofronea had a single pool; a caravanning forum in 2017 counted two. Pool numbers here have changed over time, so treat any figure as dated.
- Changing rooms and showers run on thermal water. There is a large shaded car park, food on site, and a guesthouse with a restaurant next door.
- The grounds sit in a park of about 5 hectares behind Purgly Castle, with over a hundred trees in the old nursery. Some sources attribute the 5 hectares to the whole estate rather than the pool, so read it as the setting rather than the bathing area.
- Off-camping is tolerated rather than organised, per a 2017 visitor account. Pool dimensions, slides and sports courts are not documented anywhere.
Open all year, closed Sundays
- The pools work in winter as well as summer. A February 2020 report was filed from the site, and a local portal headlines the place as the thermal pool that stays open in winter.
- It appears to be closed on Sundays. Readers complained about it in February 2020 and again in June 2026, six years apart, and nobody has contradicted them. The owner is a foundation, which fits. The operator has never published this.
- The opening and closing times are not published anywhere. That is why this page carries no structured opening hours: we would rather show nothing than publish times we invented.
- There is no official website and no published telephone number for the pool. The only identifiable channel is a Facebook page. If you need to be certain, the commune hall answers on 0257 416100.
25 lei, and 10 for children
- A full day costs 25 lei for adults, confirmed by two independent sources in June 2026. Children under 16 pay 10 lei, which comes from a single source.
- For scale, entry was 10 lei in July 2017.
- Season tickets, pensioner rates, sun loungers and parking are not published. Neither is anything about the price of food on site.
- The 20 to 30 lei range this page used to show contained the right answer without stating it. A published figure is better than a safe interval.
Getting there, and the competition
- Șofronea lies north-north-west of Arad on DJ 790, which is asphalted. The commune gives the distance as 12 km; other sources say 7, 10 or 15. Trains towards Curtici pass through, but not on Saturday mornings.
- The owner is the Humanitas foundation, whose president identified himself in the local press in 2015. A 2026 article attributes the castle restoration to a foundation of a similar name from a different county, and we could not establish which is correct.
- Of the thermal pools around Arad, Șofronea currently has less competition than it looks. Curtici is closed. Macea has been derelict since around 2007. That leaves Dorobanți as the only comparable option, about 22 to 25 km out, with hotter water and an organised campsite.
- Note for anyone comparing prices: the 35 lei figure quoted for Dorobanți traces back to our own page and has no independent source. We are fixing that separately.
- Readers have complained for years about hygiene, changing rooms and general upkeep, in comment threads in both 2020 and 2026. Those are reader comments rather than verified facts, but they are consistent enough that a page praising the place without reservation would ring false.
